There are a ton of reasons someone might be looking for a personal trainer, not all of them physical. Committing to a personal training program might mean you’re looking for someone to hold you accountable, lose weight, or boost your confidence—more than likely, it’s all of the above.
Across Kansas City, Aplomb Martial Arts offers a unique personal martial arts training experience to adults, young adults, and children ages 3+. Rather than solely relying on a group-class approach, Aplomb offers a personalized-lesson + group practice hybrid model to ensure every student gets the attention and fitness they deserve.
Going to the gym solo has benefits, but since it can be boring and lonely, it just doesn’t compare to the personal training experience and structure that Aplomb Martial Arts can provide to reach your goals.
Don’t get us wrong—you will be (happily) exhausted when you leave. But you’ll also be proud of yourself and the mental and physical work you brought to the mat from start to finish.
At Aplomb, every student receives at least one personalized training lesson every week, plus unlimited group classes. Going out of town or have a schedule conflict? No worries! With our personalized training lessons, we will always make sure you get trained, whether it’s making up the lesson at another time or doing a lesson for you in a hotel room.
In addition, your instructor will regularly go over your personal goals and progress to make sure you are always moving forward and reaching new heights. In other words, we’re here to empower you to make your life better.
American Kempo Karate
Often called “kenpo,” American Kempo migrated from South Asia and the Philippines through Hawaii and into the continental US. This multi-culturally influenced martial arts style is a solution to modern-day scenarios of violence, which use practicality and logic to survive altercations. It uses rapid, multiple strikes from the entire body to defeat an attacker, which is how it has earned the reputation of being “the art of overkill.”
Self Defense
There is a certain confidence that comes from the inherent ability to defend yourself in life-threatening situations. We work many of the practical applications of modern self-defense classes into our personal training program, making it especially popular for women and children.
Shaolin Kung Fu
According to Chinese lore, almost every martial arts style can find its origins in Shaolin. As one of the oldest, largest, and most famous styles of kung fu, Aplomb Kempo honors the Five Animals of Shaolin—Crane, Snake, Dragon, Tiger, and Leopard. We specifically emphasize the circular movements of kung fu within the Aplomb Kempo program.
Karate
Karate is now predominantly a striking art. It uses punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open-hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes. Aplomb Kempo integrates these linear strikes of karate with the other styles of our system to help our students channel their power in a safe, controlled environment.
Judo
Judo originated in Japan and uses a system of close combat that emphasizes throws, holds, and other paralyzing attacks. Many of the techniques within Aplomb Kempo call upon Judo’s approach of using an opponent’s force against themselves.
Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a self-defense martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. BJJ focuses on the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one’s opponent, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.
Cardio Kickboxing
To encourage aerobic exercise and promote cardiovascular health, we draw on many of the principles of Western Kickboxing within Aplomb Kempo. These full-body workouts are exhausting—but very rewarding—exercises help condition the muscles for both strength and reflex. It can be done to the air, with weights, or against pads. Studies have shown that the impact of striking pads develops both strength AND bone health!
Tai Chi
Tai Chi is based on a combination of Taoism philosophy, Qigong, and other martial art techniques dating back thousands of years. It uses both contrasting and complementary movements—hard and fast, slow and soft—to focus on the synchronicity of breath and body.
Chin Na
Chin Na (Qinna) is an influence within many martial art styles that involves neutralizing an opponent through the locking of his or her joints, muscles, or tendons. Chin Na techniques can be performed standing up or on the ground, making it both fun to learn and versatile in everyday scenarios.
The benefits of Aplomb Kempo are not exclusive to adults. Our personal training programs are individually tailored to each individual student, with all ages benefitting from personalized goal setting and instruction.
Students are partnered up with an individual of similar rank and age to learn and practice their techniques in this safe and controlled setting. This builds proper technique so the moves will be effective, develops confidence as new skills are achieved, and builds camaraderie with your fellow students.
Every student receives at least one personalized training session every week. Going out of town or have a schedule conflict? No worries! You can make up your lesson another time or even schedule a training session for the hotel room. In addition, students can attend up to 3 group classes per week to hone the skills they’ve learned, get a great workout, and have fun with their fellow ninjas.
